And they are different depending on whether there is a local lockdown.
At the height of lockdown, the rules meant you couldn't meet with anyone from outside your household - so couples who didn't live together were banned from meeting, dating or having sex. The latest Covid rules introduced in the last few weeks - as well as those from Boris Johnson and the national leaders yesterday - mean that is, generally, no longer the case. The rules for England suggest you should not be starting new intimate relationships - but sex and dating with someone you are in an 'established relationship' with are permitted.
The latest Govermment guidance, updated on September 22, re: "You do not need to socially distance from anyone in your household, meaning the people you live with. But even in England that doesn't apply everywhere. Generally those rules ban meeting up with people from another household.
So if you are dating someone you don't live with then meeting up or having sex will be banned. In Scotland household visits are banned - but couples are exempt and in Wales you can form an 'extended household' so you can meet up and have physical contact.
The virus can be passed through breath and saliva - so the Terence Higgins Trust recommends taking care when being intimate. The Trust recommends not kissing, wearing a face mask during sex and favouring positions where you're not face-to-face. Any new lockdown rules in England would be likely to include scrapping the rule of six - allowing up to six people to meet - and replacing it with a ban on missing households.
